Olive Oil

The ancient Greeks cleansed and moisturized their skin with Olive Oil, and through the ages this versatile oil has been used to not only directly on the skin but in the manufacture of a wide variety of products.

Everything from soaps, shampoos, skin scrubs, nail oils, lip balms and much more can boast that at one stage or the other they have had Olive Oil as an ingredient.

Olive Oil applied directly to the skin helps prevent moisture loss, soothes inflammation and creates a lovely soft sheen on the skin.

Considering that compared to many other oils and beauty ingredients, Olive Oil can be obtained easily at any supermarket at an affordable price, hence it can be used in many homemade beauty products. Here are a few to try yourself:

Eye Makeup Remover

To remove eye makeup just pour a little olive oil onto some cotton wool and gently smooth over your eyelids.

It might take a few swipes to ensure that all the makeup is removed. Try not to pull the skin too much as it is very delicate around the eye area.

Exfoliating Scrub

Mix 1 tablespoon of Caster Sugar with enough extra virgin olive oil to make a firm paste. Rub this onto your skin until the sugar dissolves – again do this gently as the sugar can be a little abrasive, then rinse off with water.

Bath Oil

Add 2 tablespoons of Olive Oil and 6 drops of an essential oil into the bath while the water is running. Do not use more than 6 drops of the essential oil as it can cause some skin reactions if your skin is sensitive.

Try oils such as Geranium, Lavender or Neroli for a wonderful scent and relaxing atmosphere. Lavender is especially beneficial to use just before bedtime as it has properties which promote relaxation and sleep.

Hair Treatment Oil

Do this treatment when you have time, maybe over a weekend.

Take 3 tablespoons of oil and rub it into your hair, little by little until you feel you have covered most of your scalp. If you need to use a little more you can do so, but a little here goes a long way.

Put a shower cap or even a plastic packet over your head, wrap it in a towel in a turban style and keep it on for 30 minutes.

Take the packet and towel off and wash your hair as normal. This treatment can be done once a week.
